Aptly titled ‘Boyfriend’ and ‘Girlfriend’, We Are Trees two latest EP releases were both great displays of well put together indie pop. Guitars shimmered, voices soared, melodies ran throughout every song, and the production captured all of this in the best possible way. All of this made me worried, in the best possible way, to see the band at Pianos in LES last week. What if they fell a little flat or their live show didn’t stand up to their record? Luckily for myself and other show-goers, We Are Trees delivered everything that makes them great, albeit in a much different fashion.
With equal parts passion, chaos, and beauty, We Are Trees drew everyone in with profuse and delightful harmonies and songs that threatened to collapse under their own weight, just before reaching a beautiful crescendo. All the while, the band displayed an earnestness not immediately found on their record, both showing the bands versatility and giving listeners a new way to approach We Are Trees music. If anything this should be the beginning of something great for James Nee and company, We Are Trees has a superb live show and two great EPs under their collective belts – hopefully the best is yet to come.
