Looking for unique handmade items?

Posted on by Sultana Aschim

Hey!   Ok, so I graduated with my BFA in 2008 in Metals and Jewelry.  Since then I have been trying to make a living selling my artwork at young artists markets.  I also find it very inspiring to go to markets and eco friendly stores to find unique one of a kind pieces and see what other artists are doing with their creativity. I’ve decided to put together a list of different markets everyone can go to (and are free to enter) to look for artists work. If you’re an artist, go to their website and see what you need to do to be a vendor. If you love art, check it out and start collecting. If you’re just bored and looking for something to do, take a ride and go roam the market!  Here’s a few in NYC to start.

1) TheMarketNYC.com- 268 Mulberry Street, (In Soho between Prince and Houston) (Manhattan, NYC)– Every Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 7pm.  This market is loaded with great designers.  A lot of it is jewelry, but I’ve done this market a few times and have found some amazing things.  Cuff bracelets made of old vinyl records, dainty jewelry, one of a kind hats, and so much more.   This is also a great market because it’s located INSIDE which is very rare.  If you are going to sell, make sure your products are not offensive.  This market is located inside a catholic school gymnasium. You have a better chance getting in if you sign up for Saturday and Sunday.  Email a week in advance.  Rent is $100 per day.

2) The Brooklyn Indie Market-  (brooklynindiemarket.com) (Brooklyn, NY)- Located under the red and white striped tent on Smith and Union Street, in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn.  Small tent in a great area of Brooklyn and lots of talent!  Many graduates of PRATT sell their work here.  Great people and atmosphere.  Re-opens April 3rd every Saturday 11-7pm and Sunday 11-6pm.  Rent is under $100.00 per day.  To be a vendor, go to their website and fill out the application with images of your work.

3) Brooklyn Flea- (brooklynflea.com) (Brooklyn, NY) Starting January 9+10, the Flea will happen every weekend at One Hanson, in the landmark former Williamsburgh Savings Bank, at the corner of Flatbush Ave. The market will operate in the historic bank space on the main floor, and in the vault on the lower level. The Flea will be open every Saturday and Sunday, 10am to 5pm, through March 27+28.  Starting in April 2010, the Flea returns to its two outdoor locations: Every Saturday in Fort Greene, and every Sunday in DUMBO. Both markets are open 10am-5pm, April through November.  I have never done this market or gone to it, but I’ve heard it is the place to be.  I believe it is much harder to get into to be a vendor then the average market because there is so much more to offer.  There are more than 100 vendors selling everything from handmade clothing, jewelry, accessories to antiques and food.

4) Artists and Fleas- (artistsandfleas.com) (Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY) The indoor Artists and Designers market is located @ 129 N. 6th St. and is open Saturdays and Sundays from 12 to 8pm weekly.  The rent for the Indoor Artists and Designers Market is $80 per day.  There are three different markets offered by Artists and Fleas.  There is the Indoor Artists & Designer Market (one of a kind handmade work), the Vintage Market, and the Market in McCarren- (open Saturdays from 10AM-6PM starting May 2nd, rain or shin).  Go to the website and fill out an application to be a vendor.  Or go and check out each market in person to see which one best suits your style.

There are so many more great markets.  Now that the weather is starting to get nicer these are great trips you can take to go exploring and find rare items.
