I was over my buddy Jerry’s(nycgrind.com owner) place in the East Village and he asked me If I wanted to go to a show. Me being me, of course I said yes. Or maybe it had something to do with Alison Fischer being there. Whatever the reason, I went.

We arrived, touched based with Alison and her friends, grabbed a few drinks, grabbed Alison a zillion Hall & Oates pins until she got the one she wanted, and then finally it was time for the show! The all girl 4 piece Barren Girls coming by way of Raleigh, NC definitely gave NYC a taste of their medicine! I had such a great time.

I just kept smiling at how rad they were. I <3 metal/punk chicks! I found myself smiling at each of them. Some smiled back. Some just made eye contact which is enough for me. The girl on the keyboard though definitely looked like she wanted to stab me in the face for some reason. But to her defense, my face kind of throws out that stab me in the face vibe.

By the time Isadora’s set started the place was packed and they definitely delivered. The crowd was definitely focused during their set. Isadora takes you high, then low, then trips you out a bit, and then rock back out. Never really a dull momment. They keep you on your feet and they’re impossible to predict. Great set guys.

I still remember the first time seeing them. I almost left the show right after the prior bands set. One of the band members was like, “Dude what do you think you’re doing? You’re leaving? Are you kidding me The Suzan are soooooooooo good.” Because his band kicked so much “arse” literally 2 minutes prior I had to give him the benefit of the doubt on his opinion of awesome bands.

I remember after that set I was talking about them for the next week. Even though I was seeing about 6-7 sets a day during that festival, only a few really stood out to me. After seeing them the first time I’ve kept my tabs on them. Every time I had a chance I would take a few of my friends to their set or show them videos I shot of them. Like clock work all of them joined the cult.

The clip I’m about to show you was shot during the Brain Cave Festival at Europa recently. I made my way around the venue conversing with a bunch of familiar faces. The first thing I had to ask each of them was, “Have you heard The Suzan before?”. The majority responded “no”.

This set really took me by surprise. Other than the first time I saw them at Crest Fest, I haven’t seen them in the presence of a serious crowd. You could tell most of the people had no clue who they were or what was about to happen. Fools Gold are no fools. Speaking of which did anyone go to Atrak at Webster Hall Saturday? It was amazing!! I’m off topic, lets get back to the topic at hand. If someone is fortunate enough to land on that label you have to make the assumption there is something special there.

Not to my surprise, like clock work, about 40 seconds in I could see people in the crowd turning left and right at their peers with bug eyes in shock. It’s OK be amazed at how righteous they are. It happens to the best of us. For all you Suzanites out there, here is a little fix to that craving of yours. I’d tell you to enjoy but that is unnecessary. They got it all covered. Great set girls! I didn’t even think it was possible for you girls to get any better but every show, every time, you prove me wrong.

This time I was fortunate enough to catch them at Europa during Brave-Cave Festival. Finally! I got to see them in a place with lighting sufficient enough to show these badasses true colors.

This 3 piece consist of Alyse Lamb(front woman, guitar), Nate Rose(drums), and Jeff Maleri (bass). They’re way to rad for me to just leave it at that so lets do some dissecting.

Jeff, the bassist shreds his ass off. Even if front woman Alyse doesn’t have her guitar in her hands, it’s like this dude has a machine gun in his hand controlling the crowd. Just endless rounds of awesome, rifling from that bass.

It makes for a perfect combination with Nate the drummer who is ridiculously fast and always on point. I pay attention to the little stuff. Some of the drum rolls that he pulls off repetitively are just out there.

And lets not forget Alyse. Oh Alyse! Where do I even start with her? I’m just going to shut the fuck up and show you a rock goddess in the flesh. To fully understand you have to watch this entire video. Enjoy!
