Union Pool. Almost everyone in Brooklyn has an opinion on the place, ranging all the way from ‘god awful’ to ‘pretty fun when you’re single’. Regardless of your opinion of the place though, if there was truly a reason to hit up Union Pool it’s for the taco truck in the back yard, home of El Diablo Tacos and one of the finest tacos in Brooklyn.
Now, let me be frank, I’ve definitely never been sober when eating any tacos from El Diablo. But, I’m not really sure if that’s much of an issue here. No matter how many beers I have, the fragrant aromas and scrumptious flavors easily outweigh any number of PBRs.
As far as the tacos are concerned, it’s a pretty authentic experience. Steamed double tortillas with your standard variety of protein (steak, chicken, pork, and even tofu, eww), with cilantro and onions. What really takes El Diablo over the top is the sauce. Somewhere between Poblano pepper and Chipotle pepper, any protein you pick tastes amazing with the added flavor of El Diablo’s sauce. It’s just the right balance between savory and spicy.
If I had any complaints about El Diablo, it’d have to be size. The portions really aren’t much, any taco you order will be donezo in about two maybe three bites. But, when you’re drunk and the prices are still pretty cheap anyway, it’s not that big of a deal…just buy in bulk. All in all, definitely the best place to get drunk munchies, without even leaving the bar. If only El Diablo left Union Pool…
El Diablo is located inside Union Pool at Union and Meeker.
