Tingers Tastings: Pagato | Organic My Ass

New stores have been popping up left and right on Bedford Avenue as of late. One of them is an “organic” ice cream spot. Being the ice cream connoisseur that I am, I had to check it out. After getting to Spike Hill a little early to check out a band, I thought I might as well have some ice cream on a hot, sweltering day. I looked across the street…blegh. Tasti-di-Lite. Fuck that, I might as well be eating pulverized cotton balls in ice.

Two blocks up was the new Pagato Organic Ice Cream Shop, so I decided to try it out. The place was small, but there were about four table and chairs outside to sit on. They had flavors like port wine (which I tasted, it was delish), but what I was really craving  was just some good old fashioned soft serve swirl.

I ordered one from ice cream lady and she asked me  a small or large. After realizing that I’d devour the small portion in one bite (I am Tornado Ting), I decided on the large.

“$4.56 please.”  Um. Are you shitting me? The size of a “large” sugar cone was what a normal cone should look like. It might have just been the stingy Asian coming out of me, but fine, I reluctantly gave her my money. All I could think was “this had better be the best God damn organic thing ever”.

It wasn’t. Oh Mr. Softee where were you in my ice cream cone crisis? The ice cream had a nice creamy texture, and I am sure many hipsters pee their pants over that fact that it’s organic, but seriously people. You are eating ice cream. If you want organic food, eat some of that farmers grown kale everyone raves about. Ice cream is bad enough as it is, marketing it as organic and then jacking up the prices is not going to make this new spot last more then a couple of months.

But who knows, maybe Pagato’s other flavored ice creams will win the hearts of the (new) yuppies of Williamsburg.

I tried it and I loved it!!! I dont know what you are complaining about… probably the best soft serve i have ever had… i have also gone back and tried the wine ice cream which was out of this world..
And yes…. organic is expensive… have you ever priced organic milk?

With so many options that are out there (especially the Van Leeuwen truck only 3 blocks away) it just didn’t stand out to me, I’ll probably go back to try their scoops, maybe I’ll have a change of heart. Thanks for you comment though!
